foranj.games, a small indie studio known for cozy yet quirky simulations, brings us Halloween Farm: Monster Family, a hybrid of farming sim and light monster-taming RPG. The game's audio is a delightful mix of spooky theremin effects and cheerful banjo plucks, perfectly framing the art direction, which pops with hand-drawn characters and a palette of purples, oranges, and glowing greens. Every pumpkin patch and haunted barn feels alive, with subtle animations like bats circling the silo and ghosts peeking from the well. The sound design rewards exploration, as each new creature emits a unique chirp or growl that hints at its mood, making the farm feel like a living organism rather than a static grid.
The storyline is surprisingly heartfelt beneath its ghoulish skin. You inherit a decaying farm from your eccentric witch aunt, only to discover the land is cursed: the scarecrow, the ghost pig, and the zombie chickens all refuse to work unless you earn their trust. The narrative unfolds through diary entries and chatty cutscenes, revealing that the farm once thrived as a sanctuary for misunderstood monsters. The core loop involves planting cursed crops (like mandrakes that scream when harvested) and using their produce to brew potions that soothe or empower your monster helpers. A special gameplay technique is the "Boo-merang" system: you throw a spectral boomerang to rotate crops, water fields, and even scare off rival pumpkin thieves in real-time, which keeps the farming from ever feeling monotonous.
However, the game stumbles in its mid-game pacing, where quests for rare monster eggs require excessive grinding of common ingredients, and the UI for managing multiple monster families can get cluttered on smaller screens. Still, the charm rarely fades, as mini-games like "Graveyard Gardening" or "Witch's Brew Brawl" break up the grind with witty dialogue and clever physics puzzles. Overall, I rate it a solid 8.5/10. It nails the blend of relaxation and gentle challenge, and the way your monster family reacts to your actions—from a zombie cow licking your hand to a vampire bat doing a happy somersault—provides wholesome feedback that makes you care. For fans of Stardew Valley with a darker sense of humor, this is a haunted gem. Just be ready for a bit of repetitive fetch quests, and you will find a game that treats both farming and friendship with genuine spooky sweetness.
How to play?
🥧 Step 1: Wake up in your aunt's dusty cottage. Go to the kitchen table to read the "Monster Manual." This teaches you basic controls: WASD to move, E to interact, and Tab to open your inventory. Follow the tutorial ghost, Spooky, who will guide you to your first plot of overgrown land.
🌽 Step 2: Equip your rusty hoe from the shed (press 1 on your hotbar). Click and hold on each of the 12 square plots to till them. Left-click a tile you just tilled to plant "Grave Berries" seeds. Water every plant using your watering can (press 2), holding left-click to spray until the soil turns dark purple.
👻 Step 3: After 2 in-game hours (each hour equals 1 real minute), your crops will be ready. Harvest them by walking near each plant and pressing E. You will see a prompt showing you gained "Grave Berry x3." Place these into your backpack (press B to check your stack). Head to the stone well behind the barn to grind them into "Mystic Juice" via the machine next to it.
🐷 Step 4: Approach the fenced area where a grumpy ghost pig is sleeping. Press E on the fence gate to open it, then throw a bottle of Mystic Juice (press 3 to select it, then left-click the pig). The pig will wake up, oink happily, and follow you. Now, talk to it (E) to assign it to "tilling duty" via the radial menu that appears.
🧹 Step 5: Unlock your first monster quest from the notice board near your cottage. Spooky asks you to collect 5 "Cursed Eggs" from the Haunted Woods east of the farm. Travel there by walking through the gate, then battle wild "Skeleton Squirrels" using your Boo-merang (press 4 to throw it). Defeating them drops eggs—pick up every glowing item on the ground.
⚗️ Step 6: Return to the farm and use the cauldron in your kitchen. Combine the 5 eggs with any 10 Grave Berries (from your inventory) to craft a "Rebirth Potion." Pour this potion on the empty scarecrow post near the pumpkin patch. A living pumpkin head will pop up, giving you a third helper. Place the pumpkin on the water-resistant plots to double your crop yield.
🏆 Step 7: Now, level up your farm by completing the daily "Monster Chores" (visible in your journal, press J). Keep feeding your monsters special treats like "Candy Corn" (bought from the traveling merchant every third day) to increase their trust. Once you have at least 4 monsters, unlock the "Harvest Festival" event, where you compete in a three-round mini-game. Win that, and you will truly become the master of this Halloween farm. Happy haunting!
