Trendish, a relatively small but ambitious indie studio, delivered a fresh and frantic take on the 2D platformer genre with MECCHA CHAMELEON. This game throws classic run-and-gun mechanics out the window, replacing them with a core identity-swapping gimmick that defines every second of its chaotic gameplay. The sound design is a high-energy blend of chiptune-inspired beats and satisfying, crunchy sound effects for each transformation, perfectly complementing the vibrant, pixel-art visuals. Each level pops with distinct color palettes, and your mechanical chameleon protagonist's animations are smooth, making the act of shifting between forms feel fluid and natural.

The game's storyline is minimal but effective, serving as a perfect backdrop for the gameplay. You play as a prototype mecha chameleon, built to infiltrate and dismantle various enemy installations by stealing the abilities of your foes. There's no deep narrative here, just a simple premise that gets you straight into the action, which is exactly the right call. The special gameplay technique centers on the 'chameleon' mechanic: you can scan and copy the weapon or ability of any standard enemy you encounter. This isn't just a power-up; it's a survival requirement. You must constantly analyze enemy types, decide which ability best suits the current obstacle, and then switch on the fly. This creates a frantic puzzle-like loop within the platforming.

However, the game is not without its flaws. The difficulty curve can spike aggressively in later stages, and some ability-switching feels slightly unresponsive when you are under heavy pressure, leading to frustrating deaths. The boss fights, while visually impressive, can sometimes devolve into pattern-memorization grinds that outstay their welcome. In my overall assessment, MECCHA CHAMELEON is a brilliant concept executed with genuine flair, though it stumbles slightly on its own ambition. How to play?

🦎 Step 1: Master the Basics. Use the D-pad or left stick to move left and right. The A button jumps, and you can hold it to wall-jump on certain surfaces. The B button performs your current special attack, while the X button activates the 'Scan' mode.

🔫 Step 2: Scan Every New Enemy. When you see an enemy with a colored aura, move close and press and hold the X button. A brief scanning animation will play. Once complete, your HUD will display a new icon representing that enemy's ability, which you have now copied permanently to your loadout.

🔄 Step 3: Switch Abilities on the Fly. Press the Y button to cycle through your copied abilities. Each ability is mapped to a weapon slot (e.g., projectile, melee, shield). Practice switching between two or three abilities quickly while jumping to get a feel for the timing.

🔽 Step 4: Use Abilities to Solve Puzzles. Many areas have color-coded barriers or environmental hazards. For example, a red barrier can only be broken by a red enemy's "Burst Shot" ability. You must scan the correct enemy in a prior zone to proceed. Think of your loadout as a keyring.

🏃 Step 6: Combine Platforming with Shifting. In high-speed chase or escape sequences, you must wall-jump, dash (if you have the dash ability scanned), and switch weapons mid-air. The key is to pre-scout the upcoming area's enemy types and have the right tool ready before you land.

⚙️ Step 7: Analyze Boss Weakness. Bosses have specific attack patterns and weak points that are tied to enemy types you encountered earlier. The boss will often spawn minions that you can scan for a temporary boost. Focus on surviving the first phase to identify the required ability, then deploy it during the boss's vulnerability window for massive damage.
